LGBT 50

DUCKIE with Yorkshire Dance, Gary Clarke Company, Pride in Hull and BBC Radio 2

Taking place as a major moment in Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Freedom season, LGBT 50 marked the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales.

Wearing Sappho’s violets, Wilde’s carnations or any flower they wished, over 50,000 people celebrated in the streets of Hull from 22nd – 29th July, from Pride in Hull to A Duckie Summer Tea Party.

The week also featured two weekends of processions, starting with Duckie’s 50 Queers for 50 Years, a series of gay icons made by Duckie with the LGBT community in Hull, and ending with Pride in Hull.

Yorkshire Dance joined A Duckie Summer Tea Party by commissioning Into the Light – a new piece of outdoor community dance choreographed by Gary Clarke.

And the ten days ended with a live concert broadcast to millions from Hull’s City Hall on BBC Radio 2 and BBC iPlayer hosted by Ana Matronic and Scott Mills and featuring artists including Marc Almond, Will Young, Alison Moyet and more.
